How local business will beat the global economy
In a time of gloom-and-doom national headlines, the timing is better than ever to empower our local business communities. So says Michael H. Shuman, an attorney and author turned economic activist. Some of his intriguing conclusions:
* The key to long-term community prosperity is a vigorous network of locally-owned businesses serving primarily local markets–instead of a reliance on outside forces.
* Despite all the popular discussion of globalization, worldwide trends (like rising oil prices) are making small, local businesses increasingly competitive.
* Localization can and should appeal to right and left alike, by combining conservatives’ passion for free markets, small business, and small government with progressives’ passion for community empowerment, sustainability and real democracy.
In his book “The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses are Beating the Global Economy,” Shuman offers nearly 100 specific suggestions to foster local economic development. We’ve invited him to look at some ways that our planned community at Hayden Canyon can serve as a catalyst for this type of growth.
“I have two suggestions,” Shuman told us. “First, fill the planned retail spaces as much as possible, not with 7-11s, but with locally owned businesses. Local businesses tend to generate, for every dollar spent, more income, wealth, jobs, taxes and charity. Second, be sure to allow a wide variety of home-based businesses. Kootenai County needs to recognize the next generation of local entrepreneurs will be probably be young people, retirees, and others who cleverly use their homes as business laboratories. Put another way, Hayden Canyon should be seen, not just as a series of comfortable homes, but as an incubator for tomorrow’s prosperity.”
Here are some of Shuman’s other suggestions to our area’s small business owners:
1. Local Niche. Make local ownership a key part of marketing your business to consumers and to investors.
2. Go Green. Make your business an outstanding local environmental citizen by using local renewable resources and reusing nonrenewable resources (through recycling and reuse), and be sure to brag to your customers about your practices.
3. BALLE Chapter. Create a local chapter of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies so that you’re not alone. Use the alliance to promote local purchasing, fight chains, solve problems, secure credit, and learn new skills.
4. Producers Cooperatives. Join existing producer’s cooperatives or other kinds of industry-specific affinity groups that collectively purchase, advertise, and lobby for local members. Or start one.
5. Bazaars. Help set up and participate in local business mini-malls, whether they are weekend farmers’ markets or dedicated shopping destinations.
6. Direct Delivery. Create or join a direct delivery service affiliated exclusively or primarily with local businesses.
7. Flexible Manufacturing. Form a network of local businesses that is ready and willing to seize manufacturing opportunities as they arise.
8. Buyers’ Cards. Team up with other local businesses to create instruments that promote local purchasing, such as local credit cards, debit cards, loyalty cards and gift cards.
9. B2G Midwife. Create a business that aggregates small businesses into compelling bids for government contracts and handles the mountain of paperwork in exchange for a fee.
10. Non-local Collaboration. Break bread with non-local businesses to learn and work together (at least wherever it does not weaken the local business community).
“Like much of the West, Idaho has gotten used to the idea that land is plentiful and driving is cheap, and development has proceeded apace with few second thoughts about lost farmland, environmental disruption, the proliferation of roads, and lost family time from all that driving,” Shuman said. “Hayden Canyon can show that another way is possible — that planning a community from the outset that makes it easy for residents to walk to the grocery store and kids to bicycle to school is a win-win for everyone.”

Leading in a new economy: Tips for employers
The challenges of leadership in today’s economy are many. Some are tried and true, while others are unlike any in recent history. Regardless, leadership is what will separate the good from the great as our country works to rebuild a thriving, stable economy. Today, businesses everywhere are ramping up to come out of this recession stronger than before and rise above the rest.
That’s why business leaders at all levels must assess their current skill sets to make sure they can effectively lead their team to produce positive outcomes for their departments and companies. “As the economy and business market changes, it’s essential for business leaders to grow and develop with it,” said Robert A. Funk, co-founder and CEO of Express Employment Professionals. “Their success as a leader and as a company depends on it.” These four tactics can be beneficial in that process.
Be Flexible. Some managers believe they always have the answers, are always right, and never need to compromise. But, today’s successful leaders realize that a heavy-hand approach can be counterproductive. The best leaders will be the ones who aren’t afraid to say “I’m not entirely sure, what do you think?” or “Hey, let’s try something new and see if it works.” The changing economy brought uncertainty to the workplace, so a flexible leadership style can help navigate in this new business environment. Leaders who are open-minded are more likely to capitalize on new ideas.
Delegate Tasks and Trust Others. The truth is, most people learn by doing. And in today’s workplace, it’s essential to allow others to grow within their career and take on more responsibility. Most people in upper management worked hard to get where they are by doing things themselves.
So, they often rely on continuing to do things the same way. But, effective leaders know how to trust others to help them accomplish their goals and delegate tasks to team members. They understand the importance of equipping their team members to accomplish individual goals. Micromanagers will not only have difficulty thriving in this new environment, but they may also lose valuable employees in the process.
Hire for Success. Hiring for success means hiring based on skill sets a leader lacks. Because a great leader knows their limitations, they’re not afraid to admit their faults. In order for business leaders to achieve desired results, they must put the right people in place. Employees who will compliment the skills of the entire team. Being surrounded by the best employees will ultimately be a boost to any leader — and will set the entire company up for success.
Coach Regularly. Mentoring employees has always been an important part of leadership, but now more than ever, it’s a necessary ingredient for any successful manager. Taking time to coach employees will result in higher productivity and increased engagement. Many employees have worked harder than ever this past year, and showing employees you’re invested in their career development will foster loyalty and respect. Leaders, even those who generally don’t consider themselves to be good mentors, will need to coach their employees and help them develop their careers.
The time for leaders to step up and focus on being effective is now. Those who achieve success will be the leaders who grow, develop, and change with the new economy. By focusing on coaching, delegation, flexibility, and hiring right, leaders will create a strong workforce that will outlast their competition and create a company that will rise above the rest.

Area Chambers Prepare for Trip to China — Orientation Meeting, June 9
We live in a global economy and a globe that continues to shrink. China is one of the fastest growing economies. Area chambers of commerce including the Coeur d’Alene Area, Post Falls and Sandpoint chambers of commerce are working together to assist individuals and companies interested in exploring opportunities in China. The three chambers are working with Citslinc International Inc. for a business exploration and familiarization tour. The trip is available to area businesses and individuals interested in learning more of the places, people and Chinese culture.
The nine-day trip includes visits to four Chinese cities — Beijing, Shanghai, Hanghou and Suzhou. During the trip individuals will participate in a variety of tours and business visits. The tours include the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Emperor Tombs and Summer Place in Beijing. Business visits in Beijing include a pearl farm, jade factory and a Chinese pharmacy (among others).
Both the tours and business visits will be of great interest to leisure and business travelers. In Hanghou and Suzhou travelers will visit a green tea plantation, silk factory, and the National Embroidery Institute. The trip concludes in Shanghai with visits to Buddhist temples dating and Old Town Shanghai. Another highlight of the time in Shanghai will be the 2010 World Expo. The trip is available to chamber members and friends who want to explore China for business and cultural experiences.

Our Title Has Been Challenged — Help Us Keep the Crown! — June 27
Summer is just around the corner and thousands of athletes are training for one of the most trying athletic events around the world. Ironman Coeur d’Alene, held June 27, has been a very successful event since it first came here in 2004, largely due to the 3,000-plus volunteers who help support the event every year. Ironman Coeur d’Alene has always been known as the Ironman with the best Volunteers. We have been challenged of our title…and we need YOU to help us keep the crown. The first Annual St. George Ironman took place May 1 and had an outpouring of more than 4,200 volunteers! We can’t be beat…Don’t miss your chance to volunteer for the 2010 race! Volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities including traffic control, bike and swim courses, and the transition areas. Come out and cheer on the athletes…help CDA Ironman keep the title of “The Best Volunteers Around!”
