Kootenai Medical Center in Top 100

For the fifth year in a row, Kootenai Medical Center has been named a Top 100 Hospital in a 2010 survey ranking 2,739 hospitals nationwide on quality of care and value to their communities.

The annual Community Value Index evaluates hospitals in four key areas: Financial viability and capital reinvestment, cost structures, patient charge structures and quality of performance.

“Community value results from costs and charges being low relative to other hospitals; in being profitable and in reinvesting those profits in new facilities, technology and new services,” said Joe Morris, CEO of Kootenai Health, which oversees the hospital.

“An award recognizing that we are a Top 100 Community Value hospital out of around 5,000 hospitals nationwide is a tribute to the board, management, employees and physicians who care about the value of the services we provide this community,” Morris said.

This year, Kootenai is also designated for the seventh year running as a Five Star hospital.

Five Star facilities must earn scores placing them in the top 20 percent of their respective peer groups. Kootenai’s peers include 459 large, non-teaching hospitals across the country.

Kootenai is the sole hospital in Idaho to earn Top 100 status.

Cleverley and Associates, an Ohio-based data and consulting services firm, annually publishes the study based on U.S. hospitals’ performances.

Prodigal son of an architect

Prodigal son of an architect

Chris Patano, owner of Patano + Hafermann Architects, LLC, recently opened a branch office in Coeur d'Alene.

COEUR d’ALENE — Growing up around not only his own architect father, but others in the business as well, it should come as no surprise that Christopher Patano developed an affinity for the work, or that he went off to a large city to practice once he had earned his degree.
The 1990 Post Falls High School graduate, son of architect Mike Patano and educator/coach Sherie Patano, has decided that after all, there really is no place like home.
After more than a decade of working in the Seattle market, Christopher has returned to Kootenai County, opening the Coeur d’Alene office of Patano + Hafermann Architects at 409 E. Coeur d’Alene Ave.
“When I grew up my dad had the biggest office in town,” he said. “I was always around architects and building sites. I always wanted to be an architect.”
After earning his bachelor’s degree at the University of Idaho and his master’s from the University of Pennsylvania,  he began his career in Seattle at internationally known Miller/Hull Partnership, where he met Laura Hafermann.
From 1999 to 2002 they were the Seattle branch of Patano Architects, and in 2003 Patano + Hafermann Architects was formed. Patano had already won the Henry Adams Medal for excellence in the study of architecture awarded to one member of each graduating class at UI, and went on to perform work for the college.
The genetics ran deep, and he also was interested in teaching, a big part of the reason for earning his master’s degree.
“A big part of our practice is teaching ideas,” he said. “We can test things out in an academic structure, like building systems and technology.”
Patano + Hafermann’s portfolio became deep in a variety of projects, from a $6.7 million expansion of Wallace Junior-Senior High School and $5.3 million Watson Furniture factory in Poulsbo, Wash., in 2003, to the $45 million Smith Cove Cruise Ship Terminal in Seattle completed in April, 2009.
“Because of my father I always wanted to work back here,” Patano said.
He is currently working with UI to design a new flagship building for the College of Engineering, containing cutting-edge transportation research, including hybrid engines, biofuels and electric vehicles.
The goal is to create a model that is close to his heart, a “net zero energy building,” of which there are fewer than 10 in the United States.
“It does not use more energy than it produces,” he said.
Using waste heat from an adjacent power plant, solar panels and passive solar energy that project is in the fundraising stage.
But what he has learned by now at age 38 is that there is a whole world of opportunities to integrate energy-efficiency technology into local projects.
“There are a lot of reasons I wanted to come back here and work,” Patano said. “The Seattle market is advanced with sustainable buildings. The climate here is perfect for the focus of our firm on energy use and building performance.”
Energy costs can be reduced significantly in commercial, industrial and residential buildings if properly designed and built, and that will be the main area of concern for Patano + Hafermann Architects.
Modern technology also means he can work on projects for the Seattle division, which his partner will run, from his Coeur d’Alene office.
“It’s like I’m sitting at my desk there,” he said.
He is already working on several projects, including a high-performance building for Doma Coffee Roasters, owned by his aunt and uncle. He has also drawn some design concepts for the new owner of the Wiggett Building at Fourth and Lakeside.
But it was a strong community of his peers that brought him back to North Idaho.
“I know all the architects in town,” he said. “They tutored me, now I’m excited to bring a new architectural voice back to Coeur d’Alene.”

Post Falls chamber holds Reverse Job Fair

Houser

A favorite Chamber event is the “Reverse Job Fair” held in May, hosted by our Business, Education and Workforce Development Committee. This committee is made up of business owners, educators and representatives with the Idaho Department of Labor.

What is the
Reverse Job Fair?
It’s an event in which students choose and research a career field they are interested in pursuing after graduation. They create a portfolio, including visual aids and prepare for several interviews that they will give within a two-hour period.
Real Life Ministries hosted 268 students from Post Falls and Lakeland School Districts, and Genesis Prep Academy. More than 150 business professionals were on hand to meet with the students. The students, mostly seniors, were interviewed by at least three adults, and in many cases students made contacts that led to summer jobs or intern opportunities.
At the end of the day, certificates of excellence and $3,500 in scholarship money, sponsored by local businesses and the Post Falls Chamber, was awarded.

K-TEC High School
The Post Falls Chamber Board of Directors is a strong supporter of K-12, as well as higher and technical education. We fully support the new KTEC High School Project, a collaboration of the Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene and Lakeland school districts and encourage residents to vote on Aug. 24 in support of this effort.
New Chamber Building
I want to take this opportunity to thank our business community for their generous donations and continued support of the building project. We are so proud of our new home. I would like to extend a personal invitation to stop by our NEW CHAMBER OFFICE and VISITOR CENTER at 201 East Fourth Ave. We’d be happy to give you a tour.
