For sale

Kasey Tate, left, and her friend Lyndsey Welding enjoy drinks Thursday at The Beacon in downtown Coeur d'Alene.

COEUR d’ALENE – The Beacon Pub and adjoining Icon sports bar, restaurant and dance club are for sale.

The downtown Sherman Avenue staples are offered together, including all furniture, fixtures and equipment for a turnkey transfer, for $2.9 million.

The Icon, formerly Brix Restaurant at 317 Sherman Ave., is listed separately and fully equipped for $1.8 million.

Owner Jerry Goggin, who bought the businesses in 2004, declined to elaborate on the sale, other than to say he plans to return to flying.

Goggin is a licensed pilot.

A Facebook page, Beacon Sale, lists details and contact information.

The establishments operate on a single liquor license, and consistently rank in the top five in Idaho for liquor and beer sales.

“It’s all right, I guess,” said Trace Potter about a possible sale as he drank a beer at the Beacon on Thursday.

“There are lots of bars down here, so if they change it, I’ll still have a place to go get a drink.”

The sale would include the Icon building, which was completely remodeled in 2002, and the Beacon lease as well as the liquor license.

“The business operates with a staff of approximately 30 well-trained and long-term employees including a top-notch management team,” the Facebook page states. “Both establishments have won numerous awards and are unique in design and efficiency.”

The page points to the central location as a business boon. The Beacon, which implemented touch-of-a-button ordering options late last year when it installed iPads on customer tables, sits on the corner of Sherman Avenue and Fourth Street, a busy intersection for downtown nightlife.

Fourth Street connecting southward to Front Avenue would be aesthetically enhanced should the proposed McEuen Field project happen. The city of Coeur d’Alene is planning on reconstructing the entire downtown park eventually, which sits a block away from the businesses.

“These are the most desired locations in downtown Coeur d’Alene,” the listing states. “The area is slated for major upgrades in the coming years with the McEuen Field project.”

The Beacon is a 3,200 square-foot-building that was constructed in 1890.

The Icon building is 11,000 square feet and was built in 1905. Brix, an upscale steakhouse, was converted into the Icon in early 2010.

BIG BITE - Small Cd’A business among nation’s fastest growing

BIG BITE – Small Cd’A business among nation’s fastest growing

Chad and Jayme Hall, owners of Alligator Diesel Performance.

A block behind Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy and just across the street from Design Events, a business success story has been born.

And every day, the story is growing.
With hamburgers sizzling on a parking lot grill and a Play Station with flat screen TV in the conference room just waiting for the next employee to grab hold of the joysticks — and get paid while playing — a visitor senses right away that at Alligator Diesel Performance, there is no such thing as Business as Usual.
A new kind of f-bomb flies furiously.
Fun.
“One of the things we can offer our employees is fun and relaxation they can’t get anyplace else,” says Chad Hall, 35, who with his wife, Jayme, also 35, owns Alligator Diesel Performance.
“Customer service comes first,” chips in Jayme. “Fun comes second.”
But it isn’t just Play Station and Burger Thursdays that have helped Jayme and Chad build their young company into a powerhouse. Alligator Diesel Performance was just recognized by Inc. magazine as one of the 500 fastest growing companies in America. Based on revenue growth from 2007 through 2010, Alligator ranked 263 among the 500 fastest growing companies in the nation — and a stunning No. 8 in the retail category.
There’s not just one secret to the Halls’ success.
There are 22.
That’s how many people they employ, including themselves: 22. But even that relatively small number represents explosive growth.
According to an Aug. 24 press release, Alligator Diesel Performance employed 16.
“Nobody takes sick days,” Jayme states matter-of-factly, “and nobody quits.”
Well, Chad corrects, there was one guy who quit in the past three years. He lasted about a month and never quite fit in.
“It was too unstructured for him,” Jayme says non-judgmentally.
For everybody else, the Halls have surrounded themselves with people who have the same value system as they do, but more than that, they’re passionate about all things diesel.
“All of the guys who work here are either customers or enthusiasts,” Chad says, noting that actually, they’re both.
For instance, every sales person owns a diesel truck. All are expert on diesel parts and service, of course, but each is even more expert on his particular ride. So when a customer calls with a question about a specific make and model, receptionist Michelle Parker quickly connects that caller with the Alligator employee who knows that truck best, inside and out.
With fun underscored, it’s the people who count, Chad and Jayme insist.
And not just the ones under their roof, but that’s a good starting point.
Take sales manager Vinnie Himes.

Chad Hall and his wife Jayme, owners of Alligator Diesel Performance, talk about their philosophy for a successful business and work environment.

Chad met Vinnie several years ago at a number of diesel enthusiast events. They became friends before they joined forces at Alligator. And Vinnie isn’t just a terrific sales manager, either.

“He’s the one who makes it fun here,” Jayme says with a grin. “We can count on him for a practical joke almost every day.”
Then there’s Holton Guyton — the only employee who moved to Kootenai County for his job at Alligator. Everybody else, Chad says, already lived here and was “underemployed or unemployed.”
Guyton, however, was a U.S. Marine serving in Afghanistan when he contacted Alligator.
“We emailed back and forth,” Chad says, “putting parts together for his truck.” When Guyton’s tour ended, the Halls convinced him to move from South Carolina to join them.
With a devoted, close-knit team at ADP, the foundation is rock solid. The company just set — and met — three goals that were posted for everyone to see.
1. Do $1 million a month in sales.
2. Increase employee pay and benefits between 10 and 15 percent.
3. Increase profit margin.
If that’s the floor, where’s the ceiling?
Chad Hall worked 10 years in the construction business before he and Jayme decided to pursue their diesel performance passion and work for themselves. The starting point was Las Vegas; the year was late 2005.
Business was OK for the couple until the economy came to a screeching halt in 2008. Chad and Jayme realized two things.
One, because their online business hadn’t slowed a bit, they could set up shop just about anywhere they wanted.
And two, Vegas wasn’t where they wanted to raise their two young sons, Jake and Josh.
Welcome to North Idaho.
“We moved here because it was a great fit,” says Chad, noting that family lives in the area. In fact, on this mid-September tour, Jayme’s mom is working in the accounting office — called The Ballroom because workers there sit happily on large rubber balls.
The Halls set up shop in Post Falls in 2009 and, in April of this year, moved to their current location at 5097 N. Building Center Drive in Coeur d’Alene.
As Inc. magazine duly noted, business is booming.
Alligator ships top diesel performance parts and accessories all over the world. Chad and Jayme have excelled because they’ve surrounded themselves with great employees, certainly, but also because they’ve developed strong relationships with suppliers around the country.
Their own warehouse is modest because, as Chad says, “Inventory is overhead. We try to keep just what we need here.”
But he also acknowledges that “there’s no way we could stock every item we sell, so our partners warehouse products.” And he does mean “partners,” not just suppliers.
“We took the time and effort to find partners who value our customers as much as we do,” he says.
That’s paid off well for the company, which will ship products at no cost for orders of $49 or more — and have those products delivered consistently in as little as one day and no more than three. For the guy in Nashville who wants an ADP 6.0L Power Stroke EGR Delete Package, no problem. It’ll probably be delivered to his door the next day.

Bryant Baxter, graphic designer for Alligator Diesel Performance, mans the grill for the company’s weekly Burger Thursday.

“That’s because we’ve got a partner in Kentucky,” says Jayme.

The Halls also operate a four-bay garage on site, where the term “local customers” takes on broader meaning.
“It’s local, but we do installs from all over the country,” Chad says. “In fact, we’re picking up four trucks from Canada this weekend.”
He sees an incredulous expression on the interviewer’s face.
“They trust us,” he says with a smile. “They know we’ll do great work and we’ll always be fair.”
With a great work environment and good pay and benefits for co-workers who love the products they’re selling, the Halls have hit the good times, but they aren’t getting carried away.
Religiously, they maintain a 50-50 ratio of sales and customer service employees — unheard of in that industry and many others.
They abide by this motto from Chad: “Do the right thing first and then figure it out from there.”
And they also pay close attention to the little things.
Just recently, they shipped brownies to all their partner/suppliers and manufacturers as a way to say thanks for the recognition by Inc. magazine.
“They thought it was kind of weird,” says Jayme with a laugh, pointing out that the suppliers/manufacturers are usually the ones sending gifts.
Then Jayme grows serious, even in the midst of a fun Burger Thursday at Alligator Diesel Performance.
“The moment we make people stop feeling so good about this,” she says, “is the moment we fail.”

October — A month of celebration

October — A month of celebration

Steve Wilson

October is a month of celebration for the Coeur d’Alene Chamber. No, not the Oktoberfest type of celebration, but rather the end of year/start of New Year type of celebration. Tuesday, Oct. 18 marks the date of our Annual Business Luncheon. It’s a time to celebrate the great year that Skip Peterson and his team had this past year, a time to celebrate the Citizen of the Year Award, a time to celebrate the Volunteer of the Year Award, and a time to celebrate the new Chairman, Darin Hayes’, new year. All of the aforementioned are most worthy of celebration in and of themselves, yet we have one more reason to celebrate — the kick-off of the Coeur d’Alene Chamber’s Centennial year long celebration.

Sept. 4, 1912, marked the date that the Coeur d’Alene Commercial Club officially changed its name to the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce, and on Sept. 21, 117 people met at a banquet in the Hotel Idaho to finalize the organization of the Coeur d’Alene Chamber. At this banquet, J.V. Hawkins spoke on “Ways of Advertising the City”.  So, join us on Oct. 18 and learn how your Chamber will be advertising its 100 years of success! The Centennial Celebration Steering Committee Chair, Kiki Miller, promises a fun and exciting program packed with many surprises. This is one luncheon you will not want to miss which will be held lakeside at the spectacular new Hagadone Event Center. Tickets are only $30 and can be purchased at the Chamber, or online at www.CdAChamber.com. Come and be a part of a great celebration!
P.S. For those of you seeking an Oktoberfest, the area does offer several throughout the month.
Other key chamber activities: North Idaho Legislative Summit, Sept. 29 — Join us in a key discussion regarding the 2011-2012 legislative session starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Best Western Coeur d’Alene Inn. Cost, including lunch is $30 for Members, $40 for non-members. Tech Tour, Oct. 7 — Come tour local businesses. Tour includes breakfast and lunch.  Cost is $40 for Members, $80 for non-members. For a list of businesses toured, please visit www.CdAChamber.com. Upbeat Breakfast, Oct. 11 — The Coeur d’Alene Convention and Visitor’s Bureau presents October’s Upbeat Breakfast, with guest speaker Karen Ballard, Administrator at the Idaho Department of Commerce.  Karen will be speaking about the state of Tourism in Idaho. Program starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. Cost with registration is $14, or $19 at the door. You can register for the key Chamber activities listed above online at www.CdAChamber.com.
Steve Wilson is interim President/CEO of the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce.
